Manage your project's critical path - Microsoft Support
By knowing and tracking the critical path for your project, as well as the resources assigned to critical tasks, you can determine which tasks can affect your project's finish date and whether your project will finish on time. The top sequence of tasks has no slack (also called "float"), and therefore drives the finish date of the project.
Change a task duration - Microsoft Support
You can change a task’s duration at any time to reflect the actual amount of time it needs. Choose View > Gantt Chart. In the Duration column for the task, type the duration in minutes (m), hours (h), days (d), weeks (w), or months (mo). If the new duration is an estimate, type a question mark (?) after it. Press Enter.
Pessimistic Finish (task field) - Microsoft Support
Description The Pessimistic Finish field contains the date that represents the worst-case possibility for when a task could finish. You can enter this date as part of a PERT analysis calculation, which takes a weighted average of expected, pessimistic, and optimistic dates and durations.
User goal: Optimize the project plan to meet the finish date
To fix the end date of the project, adjust the tasks that impact the end date the most. These tasks lie on the critical path of the project. For more articles in this series of project management instructional guides, see The Project Road Map. Project management tips before you start.
How Project schedules tasks: Behind the scenes - Microsoft Support
When you add a new task to a schedule, it automatically is scheduled to start on the project’s start date. As tasks are added to the schedule and connected to other tasks, the start times of tasks will change, and the last task to finish determines the project’s finish date.
