Ideal method for inspecting flatness of a part feature.
I have a part that has a .005" flatness callout on one surface. the surface is roughly 7x7". There are flats on the opposite side to sit on the granite plate but not sure if there is a better way to test flatness. Is there is typical method for flatness inspection?

Then there is the problem of spoting or laping. Some sources state that I can make a straight edge using the Withworth method. If I go with this route I would need to make 2 more or use 2 u-beams as the second surfaces witch seems wastefull. I would much rather spot it on the surface plate and check it with a spirit level and then finally lap it.

The neatest inspection report I've seen is just bubbles. There is a grid of bubbles, the range between max and min tolerance is the Y (vertical) axis, the number of parts is the X (cross) axis. Also, this method you are using assumes 90 is 90 and everything between 90 and 0 is what it’s supposed to be. The Iba probably rocks that no problem but it’s not always a given and if you are chasing what seems like centers it could be angle issues. Always good to do a quick sanity check.
